Raining Food

The popular, dope and over used in movies - Matrix digital Rain. But with food emojis.

Why

Almost every hacker scene in film borrows the falling green code from The Matrix. In the original it’s mostly half-width katakana. Look around those same hackers, though, and there’s always a pizza box, a doughnut and a drink within arm’s reach, so the industry clearly agrees on what hackers run on. This is that, as digital rain.

How it works

Each column is a stream of 5–25 emoji falling at its own speed, with each glyph re-rolling into a random food item every few frames. The trails come from not fully clearing the canvas each frame: a translucent black wash lets older frames fade instead of disappearing. The sketch stops after about 20 seconds. Hit Pause and Play to rerun it.

Edit

For a long time the rain had no pizza. The emoji range started one character too late and ended one too far, so it rained bread, beer and the occasional gift ribbon, but never the one food every movie hacker eats. Fixed now.
